Empty Nest? Convert That Bedroom Space!

17 October 2016

A spare bedroom is great to have when you host guests. Guess what isn’t great to have? Spare bedrooms. Multiple. More than one. As you’re probably aware, it’s a complete waste of space.  If you are a recent empty nester, you might find yourself with the conundrum of what to do with all this newly acquired extra space. Don’t waste it. Make the most of your spares!

Home Office

An obvious first option if you don’t already have one is a home office. Having a home office is seriously great: it will make you feel super organized by finally finding a home for all those piles of mail. Just imagine your entry area free from junk mail, flyers, and bills. Got a junk drawer problem? Not anymore. With a home office, you’ll have plenty of space for all those pens, receipts, and oddball coupons that find their way into that one drawer in your kitchen. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Home offices are really popular, so if you’re worried about getting ideas, fear not. There are literally thousands of spare bedroom to home office conversion ideas out there on the Internet.

Fitness Room

Home gyms are convenient. If you are a fitness buff, just think of all the money you’ll save on gym memberships. Sure, you might have to throw down some money on equipment, but if you’ll use it, you’ll save money in the long run. Maybe, like the rest of us, you’re not a fitness buff. Get a few essential home gym pieces, and maybe you’ll actually work out? At the very least, no one will judge you while you’re figuring out how to use that ridiculously complex exercise machine at the gym.

Arts & Crafts Room

If you are the crafty type, you probably know that you can rack up a ton of stuff. And all that craft stuff finds its way into every room in the house. Contain it! What could be a better idea for your spare? Here’s the thing with craft rooms, you will need some kind of unit that will organize your items. This will probably entail some kind of trip to IKEA to look at shelves. You’re welcome. Who doesn’t love going to IKEA? Once you’ve done a little planning for your room, you can get all that crafting stuff in one place, and get started on a new project.

Dressing Room

Now that your kids are out of the house, one of the best spare bedroom conversion ideas would be to transform a bedroom into a dressing room. Sharing closet space isn’t really that great, and you’ve done it for years. Do yourself a favor and build the dressing room of your dreams. Any existing storage issues you may have will completely disappear. You’ll never have to stuff your sweaters into a small shelving unit again. And you definitely won’t need to fight for who gets to use the closet first while getting ready for work. You will have to put up some rods and shelves, a few mirrors, and get creative about shoe storage, but any work you have to do up front will totally pay off in the end.

If you are a voracious reader and have tons of books in your home, create the perfect space to display and store your books. Jazz up your home library with some comfy chairs, blankets, and reading lights. This will become your favorite room in your house.
