Choosing a Grill

 Whether you’re looking to purchase that first grill, upgrade, replace, or add a second one to your arsenal, it’s best to be knowledgeable about the options available.  The art of grilling has reached new levels and you want to make sure that there are no regrets with your purchase.  Take the time to educate yourself on the different types of grills and what they do best.  To help you do that, here’s a breakdown of the three types of grills (coal, gas, and infra-red) and why they might be the right fit for you.

Charcoal Grilling

Let’s start with the good ol’ fashioned charcoal grill.  The throwback.  The grill you grew up with in your backyard.  The one your father spent many a summer night prepping, guarding and cleaning.  Charcoal has its fans and they are loyal ones.  They swear by their coal grill and will never change.  Here are a few reasons they love their grill.

Charcoal benefit #1 – High heat direct cooking.  Best for red meats, specifically steaks.

One of the reasons people swear by the charcoal grill is its ability to reach higher temperatures than most gas grills.  The more coals, the hotter it gets, obviously. Charcoal benefit #2 – Indirect heat. Smoke roasting with smoke flavor

The charcoal enthusiast will swear up and down that no matter what, the gas grill can never replicate the taste of food grilled on charcoal.  And while that might not be the case all of the time, it’s hard to argue after having a grill master smoke a rack a ribs using charcoal and/or flavored wood chips.  So while we just talked about the benefit of turning up the temperature of your grill, doing the opposite has its advantages as well.  Smoking ribs (and anything else, for that matter!) on a charcoal grill is something that is hard to duplicate on a gas grill.  So if it’s your goal to master the art of smoking ribs and brisket for that backyard BBQ, you might want to go with the throwback, the charcoal grill.

Gas Grilling

Gas Grilling benefit #1 – Indirect convection roasting. Best for whole chickens or roasts.

The ability to control your heat is what sets the gas grill apart from coal.  This simple feature allows the seasoned grill master to get creative with what you prepare for that family cook-out.  If you are looking to cook something that prefers a more steady heat, the gas grill is ideal.  Regulating the heat, not to mention getting it to where you want it, is what makes roasting that chicken a bit more scientific.  And while the term “scientific” isn’t as appetizing for some, a well grilled pork loin may change your mind.

Gas grilling benefit #2 – Cook many things at once

The often overlooked part of the perfect backyard BBQ are the fruits and vegetables.  The supporting cast of the grilling ensemble.  Never the focus, but go ahead and tell me what’s better than a perfectly roasted carrot or some grilled-marked asparagus?  How would you like a ring of grilled pineapple or some perfectly seasoned potatoes?  Yes, please.  I know that the coal grill can cook veggies, but what the people like about the gas grill is its ability to cook so many things.  All at once.
